Lake Bled is a dream destination for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and those seeking a romantic or relaxing getaway. Its idyllic blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and recreational opportunities makes it one of the most enchanting places in Europe.

The town of Bled, with its iconic Lake Bled, lies in northwestern Slovenia and is surrounded by mountains. The Bled Island is famous not just for its fairy-tale beauty, but also because it’s the only Slovenian island. The lake itself is just 2 km by 1.4 km big, which makes it a perfect size for the 6km walk along the shore.

The walk around the emerald lake is a must. It will take you the whole morning for this 6 kms walk because you will stop so many times along the shore. Prepare your camera because you won’t resist taking photos of the lake from every single angle. Take a slice of bread with you so that you can feed the ducks and swans along the way.

Key Features of Lake Bled:

Bled Island (Blejski otok):

  1. A small, charming island in the middle of the lake, home to the Church of the Assumption, a historic pilgrimage church with a tall bell tower.
  2. Visitors can reach the island by traditional wooden boats called pletna or by rowing themselves.
  3. Legend says that ringing the church bell brings good luck.

 

Bled Castle (Blejski Grad):

  1. A medieval castle perched on a cliff overlooking the lake, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
  2. Inside, visitors can explore a museum, a printing workshop, a wine cellar, and a restaurant.

The Lake Itself:

  1. Approximately 2.1 kilometers (1.3 miles) long and 1.4 kilometers (0.87 miles) wide, with a depth of up to 30.6 meters (100 feet).
  2. Known for its emerald-green waters, ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking.

Walking and Cycling Trails:

A 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) path encircles the lake, offering scenic views and access to cafés and picnic spots.

Activities and Attractions:

Rowing, hiking, and horseback riding are popular.

 

Mala Osojnica Viewpoint

Climb the peak above Bled which will enthuse you with their magnificent views. Climbing the Mala Osojnica (685 metres) will take about 45 minutes along a steep forest path. The most beautiful views of Lake Bled and its surroundings, the Karavanke, Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe mountain ranges and the Ljubljana basin await you.

 

At the end of the hike, we stopped at the Grand Hotel Toplice for a deserved break and tried.

  1. The area is famous for its Bled Cream Cake (kremšnita), a local delicacy that pairs perfectly with the serene atmosphere.
  2. The Pale Ale – craft beer from Slovenia.
