What to see and do

Alberobello is a beautiful little town, 56 Kms south of Bari. It is famous for its unique trulli houses, which are whitewashed stone dwellings with conical roofs. Here are some of the things to see and do in Alberobello:

  • Church of St. Anthony – The church is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, a popular Catholic saint known for his devotion to the poor and sick. This church is located in the Rione Monti area and is famous for its unique architecture of trulli, traditional dry stone huts with conical roofs.

The church itself is a small but beautiful example of Baroque architecture, with a facade adorned with intricate carvings and decorative details.

The interior of the church is equally impressive, featuring a number of ornate altars, frescoes, and sculptures. One of the most notable features of the church is its wooden ceiling, which is painted with intricate designs and motifs.

  • Trullo Siamese – This is a unique trullo house and it is called “Siamese” because it is actually two trulli joined together, creating a single structure with two conical roofs.

The Trullo Siamese is located in the heart of the historic center of Alberobello. Like all trulli houses, the Trullo Siamese is made entirely of local limestone, with a conical roof made of stone slabs. The interior of the Trullo Siamese is also typical of trulli houses, with a central living area and small alcoves that serve as bedrooms or storage spaces.

One of the unique features of the Trullo Siamese is its double entrance, which allows two families to live independently within the same structure. The trullo has two separate living areas, each with its own entrance, kitchen, and bathroom.

  • Trullo d’Oro – This is a beautiful trullo house that has been converted into a restaurant. It is located in the Rione Monti area and it serves delicious local cuisine.
  • Puglia is also known for its delicious olive oil. We bought some olive oil in one of the local shops along the strip, fairly priced compared to other cities/towns.
  • Rione Monti – This is the main area of Alberobello and it is where you can find most of the trulli houses. It is a charming and picturesque district, with narrow streets lined with traditional trulli houses. It’s a great place to explore on foot, with many cafes, restaurants, and shops to discover.

  • Trullo Sovrano – What makes Trullo Sovrano unique is its size and level of complexity. It is the largest trullo in Alberobello and has two floors, with a total of 14 rooms. It also features an intricate system of arches and staircases, which is not common in other trulli houses.

In the 1980s, the trullo was restored and opened to the public as a museum.

Overall, Trullo Sovrano is a fascinating and unique attraction that offers a glimpse into the history and culture of Alberobello.
